73rd Golden Globe Awards Winner Predictions - Film

On Monday!

Best Motion Picture - Drama
Carol
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

I do believe that it's only between Spotlight and Fury Road here and while I think Spotlight has a better chance, I wouldn't be surprised if the latter takes it.

WINNER: Spotlight
Alt: Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl
Will Smith, Concussion

Golden Globes loves Bryan Cranston, but they love Leo even more.

WINNER: Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Alt: Bryan Cranston, Trumbo

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Rooney Mara, Carol
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

It's a shame that two actresses in Carol will probably lose this because it's between Larson and Ronan, but I'm going with Ronan because of its campaign, and she's the high brow choice. Not that it's equivalent to HFPA but they've been trying to be one for the past 2 or 3 years.

WINNER: Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
Alt: Brie Larson, Room

Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical
The Big Short
Joy
The Martian
Spy
Trainwreck

They showed love for The Martian here for its number of noms but I think The Big Short will get this one. A surprise Trainwreck win would be satisfying though.

WINNER: The Big Short
Alt: The Martian

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical
Christian Bale, The Big Short
Steve Carell, The Big Short
Matt Damon, The Martian
Al Pacino, Danny Collins
Mark Ruffalo, Infinitely Polar Bear

I have no idea. I think Matt Damon will win against the two Big Short actors.

WINNER: Matt Damon, The Martian
Alt: Steve Carell, The Big Short

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Amy Schumer, Trainwreck
Melissa McCarthy, Spy
Maggie Smith, The Lady in the Van
Lily Tomlin, Grandma

This is a bit tricky because Joy flopped, 2015 was Amy Schumer's year, and Lily Tomlin had raves for Grandma. I say do not overthink and pick the obvious.

WINNER: Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Alt: Amy Schumer, Trainwreck

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Jane Fonda, Youth
Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
Helen Mirren, Trumbo
Alicia Vikander, Ex Machina
Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

No idea.

WINNER: Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
Alt: Helen Mirren, Trumbo (a win for Trumbo I guess?)

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Paul Dano, Love & Mercy
Idris Elba, Beast of No Nation
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Michael Shannon, 99 Homes
Sylvester Stallone, Creed

HFPA loves Idris Elba, but I think this is between Stallone and Rylance. Stallone is a big star and they love rewarding their kind, but Rylance is probably gonna sweep this category in all of the televised awards. We'll see.

WINNER: Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Alt: Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Best Director
Todd Haynes, Carol
Alejandro González Iñárritu, The Revenant
Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
Ridley Scott, The Martian

Todd Haynes should win but it's between Miller, Scott and I suppose Iñárritu. And I guess McCarthy too. This one's a great group and I won't pick the obvious in this one.

WINNER: Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
Alt: George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Screenplay
Room
Spotlight
The Big Short
Steve Jobs
The Hateful Eight

WINNER: Spotlight
Alt: The Big Short

Best Foreign Language Film

WINNER: Son of Saul
Alt: Mustang

The Good Dinosaur
Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie

WINNER: Inside Out
Alt: Anomalisa

Alt: See You Again, Fast and Furious 7 FTW
